When it comes to custom decks, our designs are anything but square, and our goal is to design and construct a deck that you and your family can enjoy for years to come. There are some aspects that we like our clients to keep in mind, though… for instance: which decking material would benefit you most? American Deck & Sunroom constructs decks in both wood and in composite materials, and each of these has their own pros and cons.

Below, we dissect the pros and cons of each of these deck materials to make the choice a little bit easier!

Composite Decks

  • Composite boards require much less follow-up work than wood, so you can spend more time enjoying your deck. Forget about annual sealing and staining, composite decks require only occasional cleaning!
  • Because of this convenience, composite boards tend to run a little bit more expensive than treated wood. Though the installation price for a composite is going to be more than wood, the actual cost over time is a good deal closer. Wood decks typically require more maintenance.
  • Composite decks are weather and stain resistant, and won’t splinter, warp or rot.
  • Composite decking typically consists of some type of plastic material, such as polyethylene and/or polyvinyl chloride, and wood particles.
  • The plastic may be from recycled products, and the boards might be hollow or solid. While solid boards expand and contract more than hollow boards, they are stronger and tend to look more like real wood than hollow composites. However, composite decking can fade if exposed to direct sunlight for long periods of time.

Wood Decks

  • Wood decks typically require slightly more maintenance, but if you’re willing to do the resealing and repairs yourself, a wood deck will still be cheaper.
  • Natural wood has been proven to stand the test of time, and can swell and shrink with the changing temperatures, making it ideal for nearly every home.
  • Wood decking provides an eye-catching array of natural colors & patterns. It is naturally attractive, and has a rustic feel that paints fail to replicate.
  • Surprisingly strong and durable – ideal for decking furniture and lighting.
  • Wood comes in a variety of shades, shapes and hues that enable you us blend them perfectly into your existing architecture.
  • Performs excellently in extreme climates (hot/cold/wet/arid).
  • Wooden decks can be stained different colors to protect the wood, and create even more of a visual draw.
  • Wooden decks also provide a chemical-free resistance to mold, decay, and even termites.
